William Stitt filed a petition for habeas corpus in the Circuit Court of Clarke County, requesting release from the custody of the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. Following a hearing, the trial court denied the petition and found that Stitt was being lawfully held by the department pursuant to a commitment order entered by the Juvenile Court of Baldwin County in August 1987.
