POSNER, Chief Judge.

This is a long-running class action (first brought in 1982, and certified as a class action in 1985) by inmates of the segregation wards in Illinois’ maximum security prisons. These inmates claim that prison officials have blocked their access to the courts in violation of the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment as interpreted in Bounds v. Smith, 430 U.S. 817, 97 S.Ct. 1491, 52 L.Ed.2d 72 (1977). After a trial conducted in 1991 and 1992, the district judge found that their right of access had indeed been infringed. Walters v.
