The plaintiff, Jane Doe, filed a multicount complaint in the circuit court of St. Clair County against Dr. Santosh E Chand and Dr. San-tosh E Chand, M.D., Ltd. (defendants), alleging, inter alia, a violation of the AIDS Confidentiality Act (the Act) (410 ILCS 305/1 et seq. (West 1998)).

Doe testified that in February 1999 she learned that her husband had tested positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
