EASTERBROOK, Circuit Judge.

May a district court remand a case on its own motion for a defect in removal procedure? Are we even entitled to ask this question? A petition for mandamus presents these subjects for decision.

Leonard E. Sturzl filed suit in a Wisconsin court on September 22, 1993. Defendant Continental Casualty Company is not a Wisconsin insurer and is required by state law to designate the state’s Commissioner of Insurance as its agent for service of process.
