On February 5, 1954, defendant Louis Maurice Smith, then 18 years of age, was committed to the Kalamazoo State Hospital following a series of somewhat minor acts of sexual aberrations such as window peeping, stealing articles of feminine apparel, and indecent exposure. On November 5, 1954, Marilyn Kraai, a student nurse, was found strangled to death in the basement of the Kalamazoo State Hospital. An autopsy revealed that she had also been the victim of rape.
