A jury convicted the defendant of murder in the *465first degree by reason of deliberate premeditation. On appeal, the defendant argues that (1) his motion for a new trial should have been allowed because he had become incompetent during the course of trial, and (2) defense counsel’s failure to raise the question of the defendant’s incompetence during trial constituted ineffective assistance of counsel.
