These two criminal appeals were consolidated with a third — No. 24,085, United States v. Coefield, 155 U.S.App.D.C. _, 476 F.2d 1152, decided February 6, 1973,—for hearing and disposition by the court en banc. The reason for this grouping of the cases for en banc treat*1147ment was that each involved a challenge to the imposition of an adult sentence as distinguished from commitment under the Federal Youth Corrections Act, 18 U.S.C. § 5005 et seq.; and the court thought it important to resolve definitively a recurring problem which has characterized the administration of…
