After a collision between two vessels in Galveston Bay, one of the ships steamed out of control, threatening to strike nearby oil rigs and platforms. Three tugboats guided the vessel into an open area, where, with the assistance of a fourth tug, they saved the errant vessel. Only the salvor who directed the operation filed a salvage-award claim. The district court found that the claimant salvor was twenty-five percent responsible for the rescue but awarded to it alone an amount that was more than twenty-five percent of the salvage value of the vessel.
