About 1:30 p.m. on 2 October 1960, at a time when the weather was clear and the highway was dry, he was driving his automobile south on U. S. Highway #52 near the town of Mount Airy and approaching the place where Welch Bridge Road intersects the highway from the east. The highway was level for one-half mile with a slight curve to the north.
