(after stating the facts as above). The court has had the benefit of able and exhaustive briefs and oral argument in behalf of both the defendant and the state. The record in this case contains 810 pages. Several hundred exceptions were reversed during the trial. In view of the supreme importance of this case, all of these exceptions have received careful consideration; but as it would fill a large volume to discuss them in detail, we will confine our discussions to those that go to the substantial merits of the case, and to such others as present questions of…
