For many years Gardner Avenue, an extension from Moravia Street, crossed the Shenango River over a county bridge in the City of New Castle. The street crossed at grade the tracks of a railroad, on the west side of the river and on the east side those of three railroads. In 1913, the bridge was destroyed by a flood, and Lawrence County petitioned the public service commission for an order abolishing the grade crossings.
