On October 16, 1997, appellant was tried by a special court-martial composed of a military judge sitting alone at Camp Pendle-ton, California. Pursuant to mixed pleas, he was found guilty of absence without leave, disrespect to a superior commissioned officer, and willful disobedience of that same superior commissioned officer, in violation of Articles 86, 89, and 90, Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 USC §§ 886, 889, and 890, respectively.
