We transferred this appeal here on our own motion to decide whether a self-insured owner of a rental vehicle, Enterprise Rent-A-Car Company of Boston, Inc. (Enterprise), may seek subrogation under G. L. c. 90, § 34M, fifth par.,2 *265against the personal automobile insurance carrier of the operator of its vehicle, Metropolitan Property and Casualty Insurance Company (Metropolitan), for personal injury protection (PIP) benefits it paid.
