On June 29, 1995, at the University of Virginia Health Science Center (“UVHSC”), T. W. Rogers gave birth to a female infant she named Rebecca G. Chittum (“Rebecca”). On June 30, 1995, at the same institution, Paula K. Johnson (“PKJ”) gave birth to a female infant she named Callie M. Conley (“Callie”). By misadventure, the identification of the two infants was switched. As a result, on July 1, 1995, PKJ, discharged on that date, took Rebecca home from UVHSC, believing her to be Callie, her natural child. T. W.
