Danny McDaniel appeals from his convictions of mortgage fraud and theft by taking. He contends that he is entitled to a new trial, *674because (1) he did not knowingly and intelligently waive his Sixth Amendment right to counsel, and (2) the trial court abused its discretion by denying his request for a continuance to hire counsel. For the reasons explained below, we reverse and remand for a new trial.
