EDMUNDS, Judge.

Defendants and third-party plaintiffs appeal the trial court’s grant of summary judgment to plaintiffs and third-party defendants and imposition of Rule 11 sanctions. We affirm in part and reverse in part.

Plaintiff David Hummer (Hummer) was a “career status teacher” in the Durham Public School system. On 12 June 1997, during a teacher workday at Northern Durham High School, Hummer was approached by the principal, Isaac Thomas (Thomas).
