An insolvent debtor may prefer his creditors to as great an extent as his property permits by payments, assignments of choses in action, by giving mortgages, bills of sale or confessions of judgment, or by any transfer of his property, such preferences not being made in a general assignment by the debtor for the benefit of creditors.
