On May 10, 1982, following a jury trial in the circuit court of Sangamon County, defendant Sherman Gibson was convicted of the offenses of home invasion, rape, deviate sexual assault, burglary, and felony theft. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1981, ch. 38, pars. 12 — 11(a)(1), 11 — 1, 11 — 3, 19 — 1, 16 — 1(a)(1).) He was subsequently sentenced to concurrent terms of 45 years’ imprisonment for home invasion, rape and deviate sexual assault and 7 years’ imprisonment for burglary.
