The defendant, James Faust, appeals from his conviction, in the Lowell Division of the District Court in Middlesex County (Lowell court), of escape by a prisoner. See G. L. c. 268, § 16 (1994 ed.). He asserts that the Lowell *299court was an improper venue for his trial and that the proper venue was Suffolk County. We transferred the case to this court on our own motion. For the reasons stated in this opinion, we affirm the defendant’s conviction.
