Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Grundy County, defendant, John E. Whitehead, was convicted of murder and aggravated kidnapping (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1981, ch. 38, pars. 9 — 1, 10 — 2) and sentenced to death and a term of 30 years’ imprisonment. On direct appeal, this court affirmed defendant’s convictions and sentences. (People v.
