Despondent, in her amended complaint, on which this case was tried to the court and a jury, among other material things, alleged as follows:
“That defendant is a contractqr, operating in the State of Washington, and working under contract with the United States of America for excavation at the dam site on the Columbia River in connection with the improvement generally spoken of as the Columbia Basin Dam project.
