A few days after William Staples became involved in a fistfight with one of his coworkers in the Bridges and Public Buildings Division of the City of Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works (“the DPW”), the City fired him from his job. He brought this case under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 claiming that the City’s action deprived him of his constitutional rights to due process and equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment.
