Shortly after a killing in July 1989, police entered an apartment in search of the culprit. Finding a group of men playing cards, the police arrested all of them. One of their number, Marcus Gonzalez, later was charged with murder after a lineup at which a witness identified him. While in custody Gonzalez confessed to the crime — not only to the police but also to a fellow card shark.
