This case involves a quarrel between defendant Joseph Atkinson and William Acorn, which resulted in Atkinson's shooting Acorn in the leg with a .38-caliber pistol on a deserted street in Port Angeles, Washington, shortly after midnight on January 11, 1976. Atkinson, who was charged with second-degree assault while armed with a firearm, admitted shooting Acorn, but claimed he acted in self-defense.
