The plaintiff-appellant, Mary Ruth Young, was injured in 1958 when she fell over a garden hose stretched across the sidewalk. The defendants-appellees operated a construction company. One of their employees had attached the hose to a fire hydrant and stretched the hose across the sidewalk to private property. The plaintiff testified that she was carrying an open umbrella, tilted slightly forward, to protect her from the wind and rain.
