This controversy arises out of an article which appeáred on the front page of the New York Times on September 19, 1980, reporting that “[a]n unidentified Very prestigious American corporation’” had offered St. Bartholomew’s Protestant Episcopal Church $100,000,000 for the church and the land on which it stands, and that a “spokesman for the church said that it was seriously considering the offer.”1 According to the article the church, which is located on Park Avenue, between 50th and 51st Streets, “might be demolished to make way for an office building.” St.…
