In this case, we consider whether Carmen Rodriguez (Carmen) and her son, Samuel Rodriguez (Samuel) (collectively, the plaintiffs), are each entitled to recover damages from the Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) for their alleged emotional *698distress resulting from several invasions of the apartment that Carmen leased from the CHA. Answering special questions, a jury found that the CHA had been comparatively negligent as to the maintenance of the premises by failing to change the door locks, and that such negligence had been a proximate cause of two of the three home invasions.
