On October 26, 1996, L.C. (the “birth mother”) gave birth to a baby boy (the “child”) in her parents’ home. B.F., the man thought to be the father of the child, was not immediately notified of the child’s birth. L.C. and her parents quickly decided to place the child for adoption; a family friend referred them to L.J. (the “adoptive mother”), a single woman desiring to adopt a child. The following day, the necessary papers were executed and the adoptive mother took the child to Birmingham.
