BRANCH, Chief Justice.

By his first assignment of error, defendant contends that the trial court violated his constitutional right to a fair trial and to the effective assistance of counsel by denying his motion for a continuance.

On the day the case was called for trial, defendant was arraigned on the three bills of indictment presented against him. In two of the three indictments, Nos. 84CRS3915 and 84CRS3916, the State had changed the dates of the alleged offenses from 20 January to 24 January 1984 and from 2 February to 31 January 1984.
