The principal evidence against the defendant was that given by Harry Sapphire, a detective, who testified that he had purchased liquor from the defendant on five different occasions. The jury convicted on two counts and acquitted on three, though the evidence on all five of the charges was of the same character. .

In support of Sapphire’s testimony, the State offered A. G. Corpening, a character witness, who testified as follows:
