This is an action brought pursuant to General Statutes § 9-3231 by Edward W. Munster and *605Sam Gejdenson, in separate petitions, each challenging the results of the election canvass and recanvass (election) for the office of the United States Representative for the Second Congressional District of Connecticut (district).2 Munster was the candidate of the Republican Party, and Gejdenson was the candidate of *606the Democratic Party. Accordingly, their names appeared on all ballots prepared for and used in the election.
