June 5, 1953, Robert G. Kruse injured his right elbow while in the performance of his duties as a regularly employed fireman for the city of Vancouver. As a result of the injury, medical treatment was necessary, and Kruse did not return to work until July 20, 1953. In January, 1954, he *216petitioned the pension board for disability retirement, as provided by the firemen’s relief and pension act, contending that, as a result of the injury, he was unable to perform safely the duties, of his employment.. The petition was supported by the required medical reports.
