Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Cook County, defendants Roger Collins and William Bracey were convicted of armed robbery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 18 — 2), aggravated kidnapping (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 10 — 2(a)(3)), and murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(1)). Pursuant to section 9 — 1(d) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(d)), the State requested a death penalty hearing, which was heard by the same jury.
