W. B. Scates immigrated to Texas as a single man in 1832, and settled in Washington, county. In November, 1836, he was married to Theodocia C.. ,Smith, and on or about the tenth of January, 1838, he. was awarded a headright land certificate for a league and labor,, one-third being granted to him individually as a single man,, and two-thirds being an augmentation in consideration of his marriage.
