In 1983, the defendant, Stephen Szargowicz, was committed to Bridgewater Treatment Center (treatment center) as a sexually dangerous person, ostensibly on the basis of his plea of guilty to a charge of indecent assault and battery. In 2006, he filed a motion to vacate his commitment on grounds that he had not, in fact, entered a guilty plea to the relevant charge. A judge of the Superior Court denied the motion and, *499later, denied what she deemed to be a motion for reconsideration.
