The defendant, Jose Lopez, pleaded guilty to a charge of murder, in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a, on April 18,1983.1 Before accept*339ing the defendant’s plea, the trial court did a searching canvass, concluded that there was a factual basis for the charge and that the plea was voluntary. Subsequent to the plea, but prior to sentencing, the defendant retained other counsel and filed a motion to withdraw his guilty plea.
