Thomas Lloyd Taunton was convicted by a jury of the capital murder (see Tex. Penal Code Ann. § 19.03(a)(7)(A) (West Supp.2014)) of his stepfather, Harold Harpst, and of the murder (see Tex. Penal Code Ann. § 19.02(b) (West 2010)) of his mother, Willie Sue Harpst. 1 After being sentenced to life imprisonment without parole and fined $10,000.00 on the capital murder charge and being sentenced to another term of life imprisonment on the murder charge, Taunton filed an appeal.
