On February 14, 2014, Stacie Clayton received angry and threatening text messages from her ex-husband, Joshua Madison Newkirk. The text messages led to a telephone conversation between Newkirk, Clayton, and Clayton’s fíaneé, Joshua Edmund Gerber. The conversation ended when Gerber, a martial-arts expert, told Newkirk he would meet him at Newkirk’s house. Newkirk, who was not at home, travelled to that location recklessly and at a high rate of speed. Shortly after he arrived, neighbors heard several gunshots and discovered Gerber’s lifeless body.
