Plaintiff, Salvatore Vitale, instituted this cause of action under the wrongful death statute, MCL 600.2922; MSA 27A.2922, as the personal representative of the estate of his deceased son, Michael D. Vitale. Plaintiffs decedent was 27 years old and mentally retarded. For 15 years he had resided at the Plymouth Center for Human Development, a state-operated facility for the care, education and development of the mentally retarded.
