The State presented evidence which tended to show the following: Between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m., Friday, 25 April 1986, David DeStefani was driving his vehicle in the one hundred block of Church Street of downtown Charlotte. As he proceeded through the intersection of Church and Trade Streets, defendant, who was walking across the street, hit his backpack against the rear quarter panel of DeStefani’s car.
