The defendant was indicted for the malice murder of Betty Jean Lee. He was convicted of felony murder 1 and sentenced to life imprisonment. 2

At 6:30 p.m. on April 10, 1984, the victim and her brother, Melvin Collier, drove into the parking lot of the Beetkees Rainbow Liquor Store in Fulton County, Georgia. Collier became involved in an argument with the defendant who was in the parking lot with two male companions.
