This whole controversy arises out of the proper construction of a deed executed by William Rutherford and John P. McNeil in the year 1817, which conveyed to the president and selectmen of the city of Natchez a certain lot of land in that city, reciting that the consideration was “for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to them in hand paid,” and then showing that the grantors had “bargained, sold, released, conveyed and confirmed, and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, convey and confirm unto the said parties of the second part and their successors forever all…
