STROUD, Judge.
Defendant appeals his convictions for possession of a firearm by a felon and attaining the status of habitual felon. For the following reasons, we grant defendant a new trial.
I. Background
The State’s evidence tended to show that on 26 June 2009, law enforcement officers from the Raleigh Police Department executed a search warrant. Once inside the apartment, the officers found numerous people along with a shotgun in a closet and a pistol in a dresser.
