It is not uncommon for corporate employers to compensate their high-ranking employees not only with cash, but also with equity in the corporation. Such arrangements align the employees’ financial incentives with, those of the company: If the company succeeds financially, so too do its stake-holding employees; but if the company falters—even to and beyond the point of bankruptcy—its employees bear some of the loss.
