This was an action for the possession of a tract of land in the county of Los Angeles, California, described in the com plaint as the southeast quarter of section fourteen, in township two, in that county. The plaintiff asserted title to the premises by a patent of the United States, bearing date October 10th, 1879, issued upon an alleged settlement1 arid purchase under the preemption laws.
