Appellant was tried by a general court-martial composed of a military judge sitting alone at Camp Pendleton, California. Pursuant to his pleas, he was found guilty of distributing and using methamphetamine, in violation of Article 112a, Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 USC § 912a. On June 3, 1997, he was sentenced to a bad-conduct discharge, confinement for 30 months, total forfeitures, and reduction to pay grade E-l.
