MARTIN, Justice.

We allowed discretionary review in this case to consider when an amendment to a juvenile petition “change[s] the nature of the conditions upon which the petition is based.” N.C.G.S. § 7B-800 (2007).

On 18 May 2006, the Cumberland County Department of Social Services (DSS) filed a juvenile petition alleging that juveniles M.G., M.B., K.R., and J.R. were each abused, neglected, and dependent.
