It is conceded that prior to 1897 the compensation of the register of deeds of Milwaukee county consisted of the fees prescribed by sec. 764-, S. & B. Ann. Stats. During the two terms the plaintiff was in office— from January 4, 1897, to January 7, 1901 — he received from such fees for recording and filing documents, and certifying-to copies thereof, and for searches and releases, $58,889.71; for making his annual statistical return to the secretary of state, $101.16; and for registering marriages, births, and deaths, $24,310.49, — making in the aggregate $83,301.36 received by…
