These consolidated appeals arise from two judgments entered by the Jefferson Circuit Court dismissing two related appeals from the Jefferson Family Court.

In August 2000, the State of Alabama, on behalf of Regina Vanhorn ("the mother"), filed a complaint in the family court seeking an adjudication of paternity as to her three children.1 In April 2001, the family court entered a default judgment against Mark A.
