CARPENETI, Justice.

I. INTRODUCTION

A mother and father disputed custody of their young son in proceedings before the superior court. The child's maternal grandmother unsuccessfully attempted to intervene in the custody dispute to pursue grandparental visitation. After a three-day custody hearing, the superior court awarded sole legal and primary physical custody to the father, and ordered the mother to pay child support.
